Golden Isles Magazine secured its second Folio award in as many years, with the announcement Wednesday in New York City.
“We are just really thrilled about it at the magazine, because this is the second year in a row that we’ve won,” said Bethany Leggett, editor of the magazine. “We won one last year, an editorial award for a series of articles, and this year we won a design award for use of illustration, and it was a concept that involved a lot of different people, so it’s an excellent display of the teamwork that goes on behind the scenes.”
The piece was specifically representing the accompanying story’s “10 Summer Cocktails to Beat the Heat,” published in the July-August edition. It beat out entries from BigLife Magazine (Rocky Mountains), Houstonia Magazine (Houston, Texas) and Sactown Magazine (Sacramento, Calif.).
Golden Isles Magazine also received honorable mention honors for the “10 Places to Visit this Fall” series in the September-October 2016 edition, and the feature design for “Serving Up Home Cooking for Saturday Brunch” in the May-June edition.
Folio, which operates from NYC, Norwalk, Conn., and Rockville, Md., is a publication focusing on the magazine publishing industry.
According to Folio, “More than 250 awards were handed out to consumer, (business-to-business), regional and association magazines. And changes in the industry were reflected by a more comprehensive focus given to apps and digital editions.”
Leggett said after first entering Folio’s Eddie & Ozzie Awards three years ago, honors grew each year — two honorable mentions in 2015, one win and one honorable mention in 2016, then one win and two honorable mentions this year. Competition for Golden Isles Magazine includes publications covering large cities, like Baltimore Magazine, and regional standard-bearers like Southern Living.
“It’s really cool to see our small but mighty staff holding it together against the bigger fish out there,” Leggett said.
