Browned grass of ditch happy in the sun’s
scorching heat, surprise of cotton in the sudden
field, silence from dust-smoked windows
of a forgotten factory, river’s clean smell
of night in the dying twilight, slouch-hatted
general’s immobile watch over town square,
sweat of summer, taste of roadside mulberries,
Elvis on the radio drumming the ear.
